“I prefer Vater sticks for their weight and wood density. In my experience, a heavier stick provides greater rebound with less effort and carries natural momentum once in motion. At the drum set, I currently play the Fusion model—the round bead creates an articulate sound, and the 0.580” grip strikes a balance between power and agility. For rudimental snare drumming, I use the MV4 marching stick, which mirrors many of the Fusion’s qualities but with the size and durability required for marching percussion. The similarities between these two models makes transitioning between drum set and rudimental snare seamless.”

Zak Morton is an alumnus of both the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps and San Jose State University. With the Vanguard, he marched in the drum line from 1994 to 1999, earning a DCI World Championship and a High Percussion Award. These years were formative in shaping his rudimental drumming and technique. After aging out, Zak pursued jazz studies at San Jose State University, where he earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Music. Today, he shares his passion for drumming on social media, exploring the intricate world of rudiments, polymeters and polyrhythms.
